 \nORIGINAL ABSTRACT:\nWhat does it mean to have ethical data practices in a
  democratic society? Here’s a hint: it’s about way more than ju
 st having a privacy policy. Data and its use are not, ipso facto, impartial
  and unbiased. And in a democratic society, the authoritarianism of “
 data” as inexorable undermines that democracy itself. We are in need 
 of an ethical framework for data collection, sharing, use, and retention th
 at actively informs a society-wide legal, regulatory, and ethical regime. T
 his tutorial is styled as a conversation about data ethics, and we will dis

 The definition of data ethics and its place in the collection, sharing, use
 , and retention of data in a democratic society;\n
 Case studies—both private and public sector—that have been the 
 subject of ethical inquiries;\n
 The questions you should ask when assessing whether your data practices are
