 nizations in driving both performance and transformation, its quality chara
 cteristics must become a paramount concern to business and IT leaders. Poor
  data quality can have grave consequences, from strategic decisions that ca
 n lead to the death of a business to operational decisions that can lead to
  the death of individuals. Typically, poor data quality characteristics hav
 e a detrimental effect on business performance, innovation, and competitive
 ness--and these effects can and should be measured.\n\nJust as with other a
 ssets, the mere act of measuring and reporting on data’s quantity, qu
 ality characteristics, usage patterns, and the various ways it is used shed
 s a spotlight on it that alone can change the way people capture, produce, 
 manage, and use it.\n\nOrganizations that take seriously the notion of data
  as an enterprise asset should engage in the same quality assessment discip
 line as with their traditional physical and financial assets. Just as other
  assets are periodically inventoried or audited, data assets should be appr
 aised periodically for improvements or degradation. To gauge and improve an
 y measure of data’s value, various characteristics should be assessed
  periodically as part of data governance programs and by data stewards.\n\n
